TV Dilema

URG!! I have posted this twice and lost it both times. So here goes.
I am having issues with the TV. It is taking over. During the week the kids are limited to an hour per day. Over the weekend it seems to ALWAYS be on, robbing us of quality time and zoning us. After binging on TV all weekend my son is having a hard time adjusting to the weekday routine. Yesterday he had a HUGE fit at turnoff time even though he had already watched well over his quota. Most of me wants to banish the beast to the basement. Some of me doesn't mind it's occasional use but I feel it is being abused. Then there is Thursday's 8pm...Survivor. The funny thing with that is I have forgotten the last three weeks it was even on only to find out in the last 15 minutes. So even this tie is fading. What to do? Anyone have some practical advice.

I grew up without TV (ours broke when I was a baby and my parents didn't replace until I moved out at age 18)...so, I also struggle with it even being in the house. Practical advice....hmm...I say, treat it like detox, and set a family pact that you're not going to watch ANY TV for a few days, a week, a month...whatever, and then when the time is over hopefully everyone will have found other things to fill their time and be less inclined to jump back into all out TV mania :)

I found that if you just make it harder to access, it cuts down.
Putting it in the basement would probably help. When its down there--unplug it! The harder it is to plug it in the less likely you are to turn it on.
Throw away the remote. This way, you can't channel surf. You have to know what you want to watch ahead of time.
Many tv's or vcrs will have settings to turn themselves off after a certain time. Ours is set to half an hour. It makes me aware of how long its been on. I have to make an effort to turn it back on--its more of a decision to keep watching or unplug.
Many people have given tv up competely. This website might give some more insight.

And lastly, have you prayed about it?

Thanks! Honestly I hadn't prayed about it, I was too busy grumbling about it instead. But I have now. It boils down to the power the TV has in our home and reclaiming it. I presented it to our small group last night and it seems we are not the only ones. Dave and I discussed it on the way home, for now it is staying in the living room. With restrictions. Please pray that we can have unity on this and that Satan would not use it to discourage me.
Thanks again.
