Recall the Unit Study that we began back in January? At the time we thought it may take 3-4 weeks from our ants to arrive, perhaps longer if weather was extreme. Then the weather got extreme and the wait continued. Over the weekend I noticed that the shipping fee was finally cashed, meaning they should be on their way. Yesterday afternoon, they arrived. Active and alert. With warnings on the tube and paper:Ants will sting! Do not handle! Adult supervision required.
So we transferred them to their new home. One escaped, DS freaked out. "Get it Mom, get it. I don't want to be stinged." (Insert hero music) I got the ant handler stick and to my delight, she cooperated and in no time was back in the enclosure. With all ants in, we made sure it was sealed tight! We watched them scurrying about until it was time to go. When we returned a few hours later they were actively making their tunnel. We watched in fascination as they clip off pieces bigger than their heads and carry them up and out of the tunnel to the top layer. Cool stuff, I tell ya.
More exciting news on the science front. The seeds planted last week have started to sprout. There little corn poked through the dirt. Making for one happy boy. He was just beginning to get discouraged. Perhaps we need to reread The Carrot Seed.
Here's our three little sprouts. We are still awaiting appearances from th pumpkin and the melon.
Thanks for letting me share our science adventures.
