Orson Welles
My doctor told me to stop having intimate dinners for four. Unless there are three other people.

With America's portions what they are, I have done my fair share of overeating. Most definitely dinners for two but I think on occasion I have had enough for four.

George Carlin
Some national parks have long waiting lists for camping reservations. When you have to wait a year to sleep next to a tree, something is wrong.

This one is for my Mom. We love to camp. Love it! And we have our favorite campgrounds including our favorite sites. So this year we were all set to make our reservations. We woke up early, logged on in advance. Had everything set to go the moment it turned 8am. You see in Michigan registration is EXACTLY 6 months before the date of check-in. And there are certain parks that fill up within 5 minutes. And the certain park that we love, happens to be one of them. So day one we both failed to get in. Day 2, I got in and my Mom did not. Even though she had both the internet registration site and a phone call into the so called "50 phone receptionist" All is worked out now and our camping plans for the 2007 camping season are made. I will get to sleep by my favorite tree, hike my favorite trails and eat camp food to my hearts content. And I don't see anything wrong with that.

4 Simple Words

This last weekend was a huge success. For those who may not be aware. The last 9 months have been an ongoing process of preparation for a weekend retreat called Chrysalis. It is a three day weekend experience for young people to come and learn the love of Christ in a life changing way. With the help of my Lord and Savior and the many godly people on my team, this weekend went extremely well. Hope to the hopeless, lives changed, the love of Christ felt, healing of past hurts, reconnection and re commitments. I love it when God shows up and does the work only He can do.

This weekend for me affirmed the message that God has been speaking to me over the last year. OBEDIENCE IN ALL THINGS, daily yielding to Him! As the head director of this weekend I have been responsible for many decisions, preparing the team, training and directing meetings. I have had to daily align myself with Christ so that all that needed to be accomplished would be done and not by my will but the will of the Father. There have been things that I have had to say or do that have not always made the most earthly sense. Yet as it all played out it was exactly what God needed to do in order for all to be accomplished.

If I were to wrap up how I felt throughout the weekend it would be immersed in the Spirit. As one person dreamed, they saw me in a room filled with water, a look of peace upon my face and a gentle smile. This is exactly how I felt. Completely and totally immersed in God's presence, surrounded by His perfect peace and filled with joy.

I am always amazed at how beautiful it is when the Body of Christ comes together to love and serve on Christ behalf. It is a beautiful, beautiful thing. I am ever thankful for the people God raised up to serve on this weekend. It was a pleasure to lead them. Logistically it could not have gone smoother.

My most touching moment of the weekend came at the closing. We were seconds away from officially being done. The community was taking communion when a woman came to me and said four simple words, "I'm proud of you!" I began to cry. This woman was not just any woman, she had been my table leader on my Chrysalis weekend 12 years earlier. She knew the broken girl that I was. I could not help but think of my faith journey over the last twelve years. We have come along way. To think that He would use ME! It blows my mind. He has raised me up to be a leader for such a time as this. For His glory. For one who knows where I came from and all that I have been through to say they were proud of me was my greatest reward. I can not help smiling. God showed up, He used even me and accomplished much on behalf of His kingdom this weekend.

Praise be to God!
God Loves You and So Do I!

1 Timothy 1:15-17

15Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners—of whom I am the worst. 16But for that very reason I was shown mercy so that in me, the worst of sinners, Christ Jesus might display his unlimited patience as an example for those who would believe on him and receive eternal life. 17Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Mom My Ride

Oh my goodness funny, thanks Karen!
Our vehicle has been a source of contention throughout our married life. Actually it began when we were coming home from a premarital counseling session. My hubby had always prided himself in a clean car. Nice and clean, that is how he likes it. And I don't fault him for that. However when we got our first car as a couple he was so, how shall I say this, fanatical that he allowed no eating in the car and laminated paper floor mats to keep the floor clean. He got a huge stack of the paper inserts that car dealerships use and he used them. Yes he did. So back to our counseling session. Our church in their wisdom required that all couple go through 6 sessions of premarital counseling with another couple who had been married for many years. On one particular night the conversation went to the car. How I thought it was a little much that he did not allow any eating in the car. He sat quietly fuming. The husband of the couple that was advising us thought hubby was a little overboard in regards to the car. On the way home Dear Hubby pulls into a McDonald's and orders two french fries. I think hmm maybe we are getting somewhere. The cashier hands hubby the bag with the two fries in them and off we go. He hands one to me and literally dumped the other all over the back seat. Stating that this is what the vehicle would look like if we ate in it. For years we had a relatively clean car. Then we had kids. And our car has never been the same. Every so often we completely gut it out and try to start fresh but we just can not seem to conquer it.
After watching this video I feel much better about our car situation. Maybe it will comfort you as well. Watch here.
PS We have had duct tape on our mirrors. Oh yes we have.
Enjoy!

Today's the Day...

If you recall last year my interest in the peregrine falcons on the Rhodes Tower in Ohio. While talking to my parents on the phone this morning, my Dad asked if I had seen any updates on the falcons. He went to the site and as the camera came up, there in the box was the first egg. There is currently only one. Updates on the site say it was laid on Saturday. The females will lay up to 4 eggs, one every 2-3 days. This years couple is Scout and Orville. Victory last year's female was injured and recovered by the DNR, she is in recovery and doing well. So go check it out, live feeds of the nest box upload every 15 seconds, although you can refresh to get a updated view at anytime.
Go check it out-http://www.ohiodnr.com/wildlife/falcons/nestboxcam.htm
To read the Falcon's blog go here-http://ohioperegrinefalcons.blogspot.com/index.html

I got a good picture of the proud parents with the egg, yet blogger is currently not cooperating.

Even the Ridiculous

I do not recall where I heard this story, it was many years ago. But it has always stuck with me.

A man was driving home from church when he felt the Lord ask him to go to a specific store and go to the frozen food aisle and stand on his head. The man thought this is the silliest thing I have ever heard or thought so he tried to dismiss it. The Lord asked again, 'Go to this store, go to the frozen food aisle and stand on your head.' He laughed at the thought of it. Then the Lord said, 'you stand in church and praise me, you sing I will go Lord where you lead me. Yet I am leading you and you will not go.' The man realized it was truly the Lord asking him to do this, so he said "Yes lord I will go." He went to the store, sheepishly went to the frozen food aisle and got down onto the ground and stood on his head. He felt rather silly there. He got up, looked to God and said there I did it. Then he heard it, the sound of weeping. He looked behind him and there was a young man. The man shared that he was going through a hard time in life and had planned to kill himself that night. He had prayed, a desperate prayer, God if you are real, send someone to stand on their head right here in this store."

You never know how your actions may affect someone. It may save their lives. You may lead them to the Lord and save their lives eternally. If God calls you to do something, regardless of how ridiculous it may sound. Do it. You may never know how it will change someone s life.

Laughing!!!

This morning I am up well before the kids. Finishing up paper work for the weekend. This morning I sent out an email with an attached document for one of the people coming for the weekend. Scan0001- Will apparently more than one item has the name scan0001 such as the one used for this post. I often will send myself duplicates of the emails I send to make sure it arrived and verify it's contents. When I checked this one, I laughed so hard. What are you going to do?
I resent it and directed the recipient to the post for further details. Thankfully the recipient is a woman with a good sense of humor.

Have you ever sent embarrassing information unintentionally?

More Than A Name

For weeks now I have had a list of names before me. The girls listed are all attending the weekend I have been organizing and will be directing this weekend. Last night I received the paper work for each of the girls including information from their sponsors on personalities and home life. Reading their stories I am moved at what God is doing in their lives and excited about what He will continue to do over the course of this weekend. They come from all different walks of life. The each have different strengths and weaknesses. They each have a story. God has called them for such a time as this to strengthen them in their faith and love them with an everlasting love. I love seeing them as God's daughter and being able to pray more specifically for them as the time draws near.
Please, join me in praying blessings over each of these girls and the weekend that is nearly here.

Oh and before I go, you are more than a name as well. You are loved by the King of Kings, Your Heavenly Father. He knows you by name. He knows your story. You are more than a name to Him. You are His precious child. And He longs to bless you with an everlasting love.

New Term

Spiritually intentional consumerism.
Pastor Brad shared it several times in his message yesterday. The first time it was like, what is that? Let's take a look at each word individually then we can put them together and see exactly what he meant.
spir·i·tu·al adj.
1. Of, relating to, consisting of, or having the nature of spirit; not tangible or material.
2. Of, concerned with, or affecting the soul.
3. Of, from, or relating to God.
4. Of or belonging to a church or religion; sacred.
5. Relating to or having the nature of spirits or a spirit; supernatural.

in·ten·tion·al
adj.
1.
Done deliberately; intended

con·sum·er·ism n.
1. The movement seeking to protect and inform consumers by requiring such practices as honest packaging and advertising, product guarantees, and improved safety standards.
2. The theory that a progressively greater consumption of goods is economically beneficial.
3. Attachment to materialistic values or possessions

Spiritually intentional consumerism: (my definition) To deliberately align yourself while consuming goods so that you affect those around you in spiritual things.

Pastor Brad shared practical ways to do this. When you shop, go to the same store, use the same cashier. Get to know their name, look them in the eye and use their name every time you see them. Use the same gas station, get to know all the tellers names. When you go to the gym, try and go at the same time, use the same locker. Get to know those around you. When you lock eyes with someone, conscientiously think 'this person matters to God.'

So often we speed through our daily grind that we ignore all those that are around us. The cashier is having a bad day, your smile could brighten it. The person in the gym could use some encouragement. Your co-worker could use a confidential ear to sort through some issues she is facing. The seeds you plant today could bear fruit in the near future. Thinking through this I have to agree, we can walk through life unapproachable in our own routines or we can deliberately reach out to others, engaging in life together. The rewards could be eternal.

Proverbs 14:31
He who oppresses the poor shows contempt for their Maker, but whoever is kind to the needy honors God.

1 Peter 3:8
Finally, all of you, live in harmony with one another; be sympathetic, love as brothers, be compassionate and humble.

Amazing

Proverbs 6:6
Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!

Sunshine and Cold

Looking out the window it looks absolutely beautiful. You walk outside and reality hits, it's still cold. Oh well. It is not officially spring...yet.

Last night the family met our best man's new baby. Healthy, sweet and cute. Very mild manored. Although he does make some outrageous sounds for one so young. :P I like newborns but I think I am glad to be out of this stage. Each stage is precious in it's own right as well as have it's challenges. Yup, I am ok with being done with the new born stage. Definitely done with diapers.

Pondering. I am an extrovert. Social. Outgoing. I like people and staying connected. I am in an odd phase in life, perhaps it is the unusual busyness I have found myself in lately. But I am not reaching out to connect with my friends as much. Some have picked up my slack and made efforts to call me periodically and check in. Others, most likely my introvert friends, it seems like I have not connected with in ages. Too long. Perhaps it is time for a ladies night at my house. A reconnection. To my ladies, I am not intentionally ignoring anyone, I am not mad at anyone, I really care deeply for each of you. Thanks for your patience with me. And by all means give me a call, I would love to hear from you. Read between the lines here: I will make time to connect with you. I am struggling to prioritize and thus relationships are touch and go. This is temporary. Seriously we should think about a Ladies Night, let me know if your in.

On speeding. If it were not for speed limit signs and the occasional police officer I would lose track of my speed and go over the limit. It is a complete unconscience thing. Drive...drive...drive...oh speed limit sign...oh I am going 5 over...back down...drive...drive...drive...hey Mr police officer ahead...4 over...back down. I try to remember to keep a constant gauge of my speed but I usually need reminders. And left on the highway I can unintentionally go 10 over in a matter of seconds. It is nice now my son is learning to read signs he will let me know what the speed limit is. Thankfully he has not quite mastered the speedometer. Perhaps when he does I will not have to worry about it any more. I will have a governor in the car.

Last night before bed, hubby and I worked out a plan to get us both to the gym in the morning. I would get up and go, when I returned he would go. Normally I am awake by 7am, this morning 7:22 was the first time I lifted my head. and I swiftly put it back down. I was not realy excited about going. I rolled over, trying to go back to sleep. When hubby stirred I told him to go ahead, that I would take a day off. My quads and calves were screaming at me yesterday and I thought I will take a recovery day. He said he was sleeping in as planned and that I should go to the gym. I laid there for a few more minutes and realized that I need to build muscle memory and if I took the day off it would probably not be to my benefit. So I got up and went to the gym. I ran 1.5 miles. I am glad I did. It felt good. Now tomorrow I can take as my day of rest.

Soon we will be off for the maple syrup festival, maybe we will see you there.

Pyramids

Tri class last night started with our 30 minute or so bike ride on the spin bikes. I am not sure if it was an easier workout last night or if it is getting easier but it did not seem to bad last night. Now don't get me wrong, it was still hard, it just did not feel like I was riding to save my life only to find out I am still being chased.
The run started out with the 5 minute warm-up as usual. Intentional focus on form as we transition from bike to run. Interesting on how your body responds to the transition. The calves just love it. After a few laps it is usually worked out and the body is ready to run.
The drill we used last night was called a pyramid. Run 2 laps walk a lap, run 4 walk a lap, run 8 walk a lap. then back down, run 4 walk a lap, run 2 walk a lap. Running 1.5 miles in all. The idea is to run at about 80%, recovering with a walking lap then increasing your volume. Thus increasing your endurance and stamina. I really pushed it, running some of my fastest laps. I broke my 30 second lap. Yippee. But the thing that I really was in awe about, the time. Comparing it to the lap times from the previous day when I ran the two mile The total time for the 25 times around the track was 3 seconds less then when I ran continuously. My pace was that much faster, that even though there was 5 laps of walking it was still a faster time. I went over it and over it, did lap averages and it is true. Remarkable.
So with a successful night on the track I decided to take pyramids to the pool today. 1 length rest, 2 lengths rest, 3 lengths rest, 4 lengths rest, then back down 3, 2, 1 with a recovery rest in between each. It was great! The 4 was a real challenge and I ended up rolling over to the back on the 4th length but that was the only time I rolled. With both my warm up and cool down I did 475 of the 500 with the front crawl. Of course I realize this was with recovery rests but this is still huge for me. I really liked how the pyramid challenges me to push it.
I am so thankful I am taking this class. I am learning a ton.

Movie Review

Just back from the Dove movie Everyone's Hero.
A boy down on himself comes across a talking baseball. When bad news hits the family he heads out to make things right. On a cross country adventure he becomes everyone's hero. The movie is filled with positive messages. It is clean and fun. The use of violence is slap stick such as running into poles and volts of electricity from the wire. Kinda like Home Alone, the bad guy has some misfortune trying to accomplish his plan.
The ending scene made me cry. Very cute and worth going to the theater for $2.50 an adult or renting for those out of the area.
We give it two thumbs up for a fun family film.

Mission Accomplished

My dear brother called me this morning and asked if he could take my kids for a couple hours. Are you serious, of course you can! With a couple hours on my hands I finished up some emails and stuff around the house, then hit the gym. I was determined to run my 2 miles. I started with my warm-up laps, then stretched. Right before I hit the track a few things were going through my mind.
-Did I drink enough water to get me through?
-2 miles huh?
-That makes 28 times around this thing.
-Boy I hope I don't get side stitches today!
-Breathe, remember to breathe.
-Don't push it too hard.
-Remember your form
-2 miles huh?
I set the stop watch took one last swig of water and off I went. At first I had in my mind 28 laps. And I began to feel overwhelmed by the number. So I told myself 2 laps, do 2 laps and that's what I did. Then I would do 1 lap and say do it again. Until before I knew it I was at 1/2 a mile, a quarter of the way. Around and around and around I went until I was at 1.5 miles. I noticed my breathing was pretty relaxed and I still had quite a bit of energy so I decided to pick it up just a bit. Lap 26 I decided let's finish this thing strong. So I picked it up some more. Then last lap I pushed it doing the lap in 35.17 making it my fastest lap of the run. WooHoo 2 miles in 21.21. I did it. And I felt great. And I have hope for the next goal, 2.5. I finally made it past that mental barrier. One down, many more to overcome. Yet with each victory it brings this joy and hope.
Oh, just in case you were wondering, I did not find myself thirsty during the run itself. I did however chug down about 20 oz shortly after. :)

Note: Thanks for all the encouragement I have received in this training process! And Kili normally I would take my kids to the totwatch provided by the YMCA at no extra charge. Then we do some physical activity together, making it fun for them too.

The 500

Tri class, taking discipline to the next level. Hopping in the pool I noticed the comradery that has developed between all of us triathletes. General encouragement. Training progress. Life in general. Difficulties experienced. It's great. We are all doing triathlon for different reasons. Yet we have a common goal. To finish a sprint triathlon. Not necessarily be the first to finish, most of us will be simply ecstatic to finish.
In the pool, the instructors tell us to do a 75 warm-up (3 lengths) which we do. At this point I think this is the farthest continuous swim I had done. We get to the other end completing the 75 and with impish grins they advise we stretch GOOD. The look in their eyes told me we were in for it. Then their little plan was told. Swim a timed 500, continuous. 20 lengths of the pool. Excuse me, come again. Yikes. To say I felt a bit intimidated would be speaking the truth. That's what I do, speak truth. Then they decided to have mercy on us and allow us to switch strokes as necessary. Meaning I could use my beloved back stroke. Setting off I wanted to use the front crawl for as much of the 500 as I possibly could manage. Lengths turned into laps and so it continued for many laps. We all lost count of how many we had done, including the instructors. I knew that the fastest guy in my lane had lapped me once, so I figured once he stops I have one lap to go. He finished and I did 50 more. Then I finished. Repeat I finished....yeah! Everyone cheered each other on and congratulated each other on a finish. My time was 12:40. I seriously think we did 50 more yards than were needed. Because for most of it I had been counting then I lost track. So worst case I did 550 yards.
The triathlon length will be 400 meters. So now I know I can do the length. This exercise pushed be beyond my own expectations. It is time to up my performance and training in the pool. I now know I CAN DO 100's. And I can do a continuous 500, perhaps not all front, but my goal is to do all front for the triathlon. I have a feeling many more 500's will be in my near future. Each one doing one less lap of back stroke than the previous.
After my swim I went to the track and got in a one mile run. Nothing fabulous but I got a feeling of the energy that will be required to complete the whole triathlon. Time to improve my nutrition. I have slacked the last two weeks. Ferocious appetite I tell you. I know I need the calories and the food, now I need to make the most of that intake.
Today, I intend to conquer my two mile run, yet to be accomplished. I know I will feel triumphant to get it done.

Thanks Bek

Spring

UH OH!!!

They Have Arrived

Recall the Unit Study that we began back in January? At the time we thought it may take 3-4 weeks from our ants to arrive, perhaps longer if weather was extreme. Then the weather got extreme and the wait continued. Over the weekend I noticed that the shipping fee was finally cashed, meaning they should be on their way. Yesterday afternoon, they arrived. Active and alert. With warnings on the tube and paper:Ants will sting! Do not handle! Adult supervision required.

So we transferred them to their new home. One escaped, DS freaked out. "Get it Mom, get it. I don't want to be stinged." (Insert hero music) I got the ant handler stick and to my delight, she cooperated and in no time was back in the enclosure. With all ants in, we made sure it was sealed tight! We watched them scurrying about until it was time to go. When we returned a few hours later they were actively making their tunnel. We watched in fascination as they clip off pieces bigger than their heads and carry them up and out of the tunnel to the top layer. Cool stuff, I tell ya.

More exciting news on the science front. The seeds planted last week have started to sprout. There little corn poked through the dirt. Making for one happy boy. He was just beginning to get discouraged. Perhaps we need to reread The Carrot Seed.

Here's our three little sprouts. We are still awaiting appearances from th pumpkin and the melon.

Thanks for letting me share our science adventures.

I Like It I Like It

Yesterday was beautiful. By that I mean it was 50 and windless. Glorious! Since it was so nice I got my new bike out, fitted it with the computer and took her out on her maiden voyage. Nothing fancy, simply around the neighborhood. It took me a few minutes to get a handle on the gear system, it is complete different then the old. Yet so nice. The seat is comfy, yippee! I felt like it was a smooth, easy ride and am very pleased.
Still to do, is transfer the mount for the tag-along. I am hopeful that DD will be able to use it this year meaning we can take longer trips. If she is not able, my girlfriend is lending me a bike trailer that I can pull her in. Added weight and work but I am sure it could only improve my biking.
I was just so excited to have a nice enough day to get her out. Here is too a wonderful summer of biking.

I came across this picture this week of DS and I on the WOW ride in 2005. He is riding the tag-along and I am on my "old" bike. It was taken at the completion of our 18 mile ride.

Where Oh Where Did It Go

Anyone know where $11.85 went in my bank account? I spent over an hour last night scouring over the last two months statements. Every purchase to the penny, matching it, over and over again. There is a difference of eleven dollars and eighty-five cents. Vanished, leaving no trace. Gone, unaccounted. Where, oh, where did it go?

Sweet Moment

Tonight for bedtime I was reading the story of Samuel to little girl. In it it was talking about how God talked to Samuel.
She said "Right we pray to God?"
"Yes, does God ever talk to you?"
She nodded her head yes.
"What does he say to you?"
"I love you."

If that is not the sweetest thing. For her to know that God loves her and that He is speaking that over her and she hears it. Precious.

Frankly My Dear

I have been a poor manager of my time the last two days.
The reasons are many. I have a lot on my plate. I wanted to finish reading my book. My bloglines had been severely neglected. And I am feeling selfish.
With school done I have been checking out on the kids the last two days. Quiet time in their rooms, more than enough TV time and lots of free play.
Good has come from it. The kids are playing fabulously with each other. I finished my book. I caught up on bloglines. I handled the many situations that have arose this week in regards to the weekend that I am directing.
I feel like I am running downstairs to cope though. The "quick check" of my email turns into an hour reading blogs. On one hand I have amazing peace about everything that has happened this week. And on the other I ask myself, "Are the kids handling this well?" I think so. When I look at the big picture, my kids have so much of my time. With school and meals and our time at the YMCA and the everyday play that I do partake in. My kids are not deprived. Even in the midst of this whirlwind of a week we have had some great moments. I am here except for about 2 hours of the day other than those I am completely and wholeheartedly paying attention to them.
Two more weeks of this distracted mom, dealing with the responsibility of things beyond the home. Then it will be nice to settle back into a more relaxed environment. YEAH!!!
Perhaps it is not helping that Dear Dad is out of town for the week and I just found out his trip will be extended by two days. Thankfully it is only two days and not a week or more.
If you think of me say a little pray. Balance, good steward of my time, wise in decision making, peace in the home and obedience to the Holy Spirit. Oh and hubbies safe return would be good too.

Ecstatic

After taking a look at my splits for the mile and a half I was encouraged and challenged that I can improve. I was talking to my Dad who figured out the math of what my splits needed to be to bring my mile under 10 minutes. 42 seconds per lap on my YMCA track, which is 14 laps to the mile. Last night my times were averaging around 52 seconds and I had only one lap that was under the time of 42 seconds. It was my last lap at 36 seconds. I really pushed myself to finish strong.
So tonight with my handy new watch, I hit the track, ready to pick up the pace. My first lap I ran in 35 seconds, interesting.
Lap 2, 36.38
Lap 3, 39.89
Lap 4, 40.51
I was noticing the trend of slowing down. Yet I also knew that I was in this for the whole mile and my times were still under the 42 second goal.
Lap 5, 42.08
Lap 6, 43.71
Lap 7, 43.29
Half way there and my total time was at 4 minutes and 40 seconds. I checked again to make sure. Did this mean I might actually break the 10 minute mark? If I kept up the pace, yes!
Lap 8, 42.82
Lap 9, 42.41
Lap10, 42.57
Lap 11, 42.41
Lap12, 41.02
All those times were at or under my goal...I was beginning to get excited at the reality. I knew I still had some energy and wanted to finish the last two laps strong so I tried picking it up a bit.
Lap13, 39.36
Lap 14, 37.54
Total time 9 minutes and 29 seconds!
I had dropped TWO WHOLE MINUTES off my time. WOOHOO!!!!!! Definitely out of breathe but doing a little dance. Oh, did I forget to mention? I did this after a butt-kicking workout in the pool.
My next goal is to run 2 miles. I will let you know when and if this is accomplished.
On Thursday we will work on form. I look forward to learning what I can do to improve. The better the form the easier the run. The easier the run, the farther I can go. The farther I can go...

My Visit to Playmakers

I made it to Playmaker's yesterday and was not disappointed. I found one of the guys I had been referred to, which was a bonus. He had me take off my shoes, roll up my pants and walk 20 feet and back so he could get a good look at the way I walk and what my feet need from a shoe. After looking at how I had worn my old shoes he had an idea of what would fit me best. He pulled about 10 different styles away from the wall so I could look over each. Then I chose 3 different shoes, all different brands to try on. To try them on, I not only put them on my feet but I ran around in them, walked around the store, swifted weight and really got a feel for the shoe before trying on the next one. Then I had it down to two different shoes. Both were great shoes, I really could not go worse than the old pair and everything was like a miracle in comparision. So I put one of each and walked around some more. I felt like I had a winner. Then I asked about any sales in a shoe that may fit me. He pulled out a shoe from last year that was very similar to the one I had choosen. I tried that one on while still wearing the other and walked around some more. The only difference I could feel was in the middle foot support and I liked the original choice best so I went with those. The other would have saved me $20 bucks, and normally that would have been a done deal. But I really wanted "the best shoe for me." So that's what I did. I ended up with a pair of Asic Gel 2120's. Love them! I ran 1 1/2 miles in them last night and was more than pleased. First of all, I broke my mile mental block and secondly my feet and legs felt good. Woohoo!

While I was still at Playmaker's I wanted to look into watches. I have not had a watch in many, many years. I have been wanting a watch since I began my training. In the fall I had a stopwatch, do you think I can find it anywhere? Um, not so much. So I found a display of watches and asked for assistance. The gentleman that came over was wonderful. He was a triathlete. He knew what he was talking about and owned one of the watches so he could truly answer my questions. Brilliant! Timex makes a whole series called Ironman Triathlon. They are perfect for runners of any kind and are water resistant making them good for pool use. The one I chose has a 30 lap memory. Love it! While I was running my 1 1/2 mile last night, each time I hit my lap mark I hit the split button and it recorded what lap I was on and how fast I ran that split. NO MORE WONDERING if I am on lap 10 or 11. Hit the button and whalaa...my watch tells me. Brilliant! It made the run so much more enjoyable, I was no longer focusing on which lap I was on and I was able to relax into the run and focus more on form and breathing. NOTE: For those interested in picking up one of these watches I found them $15 cheaper at Wal-Mart. Worth every penny I paid for it, especially with the added input from the sales guy, it's an even better deal at Wal-Mart.

This is my watch, just a different color. Mine is more of a teal. It also comes in pink.

So I walked out of Playmaker's having spent some money but very happy with what I found. Need a new shoe? Go to Playmaker's! Seriously.

Cup Stacking

Dear son has set out on cup stacking adventures of his own.

Too bad the pro set costs this.

I Survived

Triathlon training Day 2
On Tuesday I endured the swim portion of the training. Last night it was time for the bike and running. We arrived, set up our spin bikes, similar to the one shown below. We strapped our feet into the peddles and away we went. These things are amazing. Before long I had a nice sweat going, and not much longer after that I was breathing in such a way that resembled my dog. Panting, yes that is how you could describe it. The bike routine was led by an instructor who called out our resistance, speed and position on the bike. Such as sit and stand. Uh, yeah I always thought it was easiest to stand and peddle up a hill, it kicked my butt. I made it through the workout. Sadly, realizing that I have some major improvement needed in the bike category.

Then it was on to the run. We went upstairs to the track, got our class syllabus and headed out on a 5 minute warm-up. The warm -up had my heart beating and breathe increased. It did not take me long to realize that I am at the bottom of the running totem pole. After the warm-up we stretched. Apparently it is best to warm-up first before stretching. This is why I am taking the class to learn. After we stretched it was time for our base mile. Everyone at once was off and running. The idea was for the instructor to get an idea of what everyone's running abilities are and to get our base time. About half way into the first lap everyone else had pretty much broken away. We were told to do a comfortable pace "for us." So I stuck to my stride and went around and around and around. I was lapped by everyone. More than once. Oddly enough I was not discouraged I kept plugging away. I finished with a time of 11.29. Eleven minutes and 29 seconds. I was actually happy with this time. I thought it would be closer to 15 minutes. Distance running is not a strong point for me. I know the three miles is going to challenge me. I also know that as I go through the class I will improve. There is so much I can learn from the instructor. My next running goal is to complete the mile at the end of the 7 weeks in under 10 minutes. I have some work to do.
We left class with a weekly assignment. We are to run a hard 1/2 mile in 2-3 days and then 1 1/2 miles at a moderate pace in 4-5 days. It's all good!

THANK YOU to everyone who left comments about running shoes! I am making a trip to Playmaker's on Monday. I will let you know what I end up with. Whatever it is, IT HAS TO BE BETTER THAN MY $9 WAL-MART SPECIALS.

The Boy's Projects

Ever made am ice cave?
My boy spent literally hours creating his.
To make fill a bucket with water and freeze. For best results 2-3 days in the freezer. Overnight will work but result in a pocket of water. Then again reaching the pocket of water was great fun. Once you have a block of ice transfer it to a cake pan, fill a water bottle with warm water and salt and let them squirt away. Warning: You may go through a box of salt depending on your child's interest. The effect is really cool.

Squirting in the same spot results in tunneling. Cool stuff.

Yesterday we arrived home to a Sear's truck in the road. Turns out one of our neighbors got a new washer and dryer. DS went up to the Sear's man and asked if he could have the washer box. Below is my son creating his fort/pirate ship/ club house.

Today he spent his own money on two cans of spray paint. Of course one being his favorite color...ORANGE!

So how long does it take spray paint to come off hands?

A boy and his projects...priceless.

And So It Begins...

Last night marked the start of the triathlon training class at the YMCA. The last session there was one guy in the class and last night there was 10 of us! Most of us beginners. Tuesdays are swimming so the first thing they had us do was go down and back to watch our strokes and breathe control. And lucky me? I was moved to the advance group. Which was awesome and EXHAUSTING. It took me to a whole new level of swimming which left me breathless. Or shall I shall short of breathe. At one point the lifeguard who has taught me a few things looked at me, smiled and said "Welcome to swimming!"
In all I think we did about 500 meters, focusing on different strokes and breathing each time. I was surprised how much I had improved because the last 50 were easier than the first 50. I would consider this is a very good thing.
Today I went back to the pool and did about 400 meters focusing on some of the things I learned last night. My goal of going the full 400 meters with forward crawl is looking much more feasible than before. I have a lot of work ahead of me but I think I CAN do it.
After my swim I headed up stairs for 15 minutes on the bike, some weights and a mile on the eliptical. I knew it was not going to be a piece of cake but I think the care provider at the Y put it well when she said she felt like "a wilted flower." After a good lunch I am revived and full of energy but that immediate period of time following the workout was slow moving.
I am eager to see what the bike and running portion of the class will be like. The run is still proving to be challenging for me at this time. I am in desperate need of some running shoes. These $10 Wal-Mart specials and not cutting it. Yesterday I checked out a few shoes at the mall. I am still uncertain what I want or need. So if anyone has some recommendations, I am all ears.

Have a great day!

This Week in our World

SATURDAY-
I went to get my blood drawn for a routine check. The kids went with me and I gave them a play by play of what was going on. They both thought it was pretty cool. Some of the best field trips are unplanned everyday life.

SUNDAY-
RESCUE Dear son spent the night at his cousin's house. In the morning they went out to play. They were playing in the snow and climbing trees. The next thing my sister-in-law knows her son is asking for help. MY SON is hanging upside-down in the tree. Adrenaline kicked in and my SIL rushed to his aide. He was hanging by a string on his boots upside-down. Thankfully it was a low branch and she was able to reach him form the ground. Brings new meaning to "by your boot straps."

MONDAY-
I will be enjoying a woman's retreat for homeschooling mothers next week. On Monday night I got together with three other woman who will be leading worship for the retreat. Songs I know well but have not heard in a long time. I look forward to serving with these woman and getting to know them better.

TUESDAY-
With temps in the high 40's we went outdoors and made our snow family.

WEDNESDAY-
The weather was irresistible! The snow was still covering the ground but temps were again the 40's and there was no wind. We decided to be track detectives and headed out to the nature center. We took a nice hike and found turkey, squirrel, deer tracks a more. The most interesting discovery was that of rabbit remains and what looked to be coyote tracks.
After the nature center we went to the zoo to see what it is like during the winter months. To our delight many animals were out enjoying the day. Our favorite was the otter. Last summer the zoo built a new otter exhibit with an underwater viewing deck. The kids had never been there while the otters were swimming. On Tuesday the one otter was especially playful, racing with the kids up and down the glass and even playing peek-a-boo. If the kids would turn he would whip right around and chase after them. It was really fun to watch.
Field trips need not be planned weeks in advance, spontaneity resulted in an afternoon of learning and fun.

THURSDAY-
I spent the evening with the Worship Arts team at church. Watching as they rehearsed for Sunday morning. I danced in the wings and on the stage throughout the practice and envisioned next steps. I thoroughly enjoyed getting to watch these great people interact and prepare. Blessed.

FRIDAY-
I wanted to get checked out before I began the more intense training for this triathlon. Today I visited the doctor and went over the test results from my blood work. Everything looks great and I was given the green light to physically exert myself. Her words of wisdom; drink lots of fluids and stretch, stretch, stretch.
Tonight hubby and I will be dropping our kids off to the church and going out on a date with another couple. I am looking ofrward to it.

From one who rarely schedule's anything...the next month is booked. WHo knows what it will do to my blogging. Until next time, BE BLESSED!

Never Try This At Home

Guest Blogger: Written by five year old dear son(DS)

"NEVER TRY THIS AT HOME!
This is mythbusters." -DS

This is the experiment:
Put bubbles into a bottle and water.
Then shake it. Then pump it.
The bubbles will shrink.
We put it upside-down and took the top off.
IT EXPLODED!

It got everywhere, even on the ceiling.

I thought it was cool. It made me laugh so hard.
Remember: Never try this at home. Ever. Ever.

That's all.

Who Do You Love?

I love all of you! Have a blessed day!

He answered: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind' ; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.' "

Defeat Part 1

The last couple of days I have been chewing on the thought of defeat. What is defeat? Why do we walk around defeated, discouraged and depressed? What does God have to say about it? What can one do about it?
Defeat is everywhere we turn. People downcast. An unbelief in oneself.
The one who is dieting says to themselves, "I am never going to lose this weight."
The one who wants to play on the team says, "I am not good enough, they don't want me."
The teenager says, "I am insignificant, who am I?"
The husband struggling to provide says, "I am a failure."
The new mother says, "I don't think I am cut out for this."
I can't. I never will. I am no good.
Defeat.
In the movie Facing the Giants there are three characters dealing with different forms of defeat. The defeated man. He is overwhelmed and can not seem to get ahead. There is the new kid who does not even want to try because of fear that he will fail. And there is the captain of the team who sets a limit in his mind of what can be accomplished and even then does not think it will be obtained. I love how the story carries each of the characters through to victory. Two words...death crawl...you have to see this movie. I don't want to give anything away so I will stop there but really go rent it, buy it, borrow it...watch it.
As I have been training this last week I have been thinking a bit about limitations. For example I know the requirements of the course for the triathlon. I know I will need to swim 400 meters, bike 16 kilometers, and run 5 kilometers. I know where I currently am. I can consistently move the 1/4 mile. I can bike 10 miles in 41 minutes and will let's just say I have not finished a 3 mile run. I have been asking myself why I have not yet finished a 3 mile run. "Self, why have you not done it yet?" And the answer would probably be that I defeat myself before I even step foot on the track. I say "I only did a mile last time I bet I will only make a mile today." Other days I say baby steps, slowly build-up to it. Yesterday I realized something. I got on the bike thinking I will bike for 30 minutes. I started along and before I knew it the 30 minutes was almost done, I had gone 7 miles and thought I am so close to the 10 I know I can do it! So I did. I peddled on for another 3 miles and made it to the ten mile mark. WooHoo! The odd part of it was that the last three miles were easier than the first three. Why is that? Determination? The desire to obtain the goal? Strong-will? Believing that I could do it? Wanting it?
More tomorrow...

Facing the Giants

What do you get when a church listens to the call God placed in a man?
One incredible movie!

Facing the Giants is that movie.
When the Media Arts Pastor at Sherwood Church heard a survey sighting the influence of the media, their church knew they had to do something. They began to make movies. Facing the Giants is their second release and the storyline came directly from God. The actors are all untrained volunteers from the congregation. You want to talk about a community coming together for a common goal and vision and not for their own glory or benefit but only the Lord's. That is this movie, that is this church.
It is a must see. Must own.
We need to support these efforts so that more opportunities for Christian and family films arise. I would love to see Sherwood produce many, many more movies.
So go watch the movie. Make sure you watch the behind the scenes and extras. They are awesome. Their story is awesome. Our God is awesome.
Nothing is impossible for God!

My New Bike

Crossroads Elite

Training

This week I have taken a few steps in my training for this summer's triathlon. On Wednesday I went in to swim. The lifeguard said he would work with me on my breathing. It desperately needs help so I agreed. Here is what I have learned:
Breathe out through your nose
Breathe in through your mouth
4 count is best
My bodies natural rhythm is 8
4 confuses me somehow
Also acceptable is a 2 count; always breathing with the right stroke
I think this is how I am going to breathe for the triathlon
It is a constant exhale/inhale rhythm
I think it will work if I can keep from swallowing/snorting water
I snort water more than I should
It is best to have your hair pulled back
My hair is a huge contributor to snorting water
It may be time for a lovely swim cap
Fingers should be kept together, I was like a bear claw
Legs as close together as possible
Small brisk kicks
When breathing do not look up to the ceiling or sky
Do not bob you head or thrust it forward
It should be a smooth glance over to the wall with your head resting on your arm
I have a long ways to go
I can swim the 1/4 mile consistently
Switching strokes between free style, back and kick board.
I want to continue to lengthen my free style distance every week until I can go the whole distance this way

That is the swimming portion of the training

Biking I go about 5 miles each time I am on. I am starting to experience a weird numbness in the tip of my nose. If I am on the bike to long it is the slightest of tingling. I have an appointment with my doctor in 2 weeks. I wanted to have my blood drawn and a basic panel run. It will tell me cholesterol, blood counts, kidney and liver function and much more. I plan to talk to her about the tingly nose at that time. Also, on the bike front I am considering buying a new bike. My current bike is a Wal-Mart special. I plan on checking into models this weekend. I may be a new owner by the end of this weekend. (SMILE)

Running I am comfortable with a mile on the track. I have yet to make peace with the treadmill. I am not fond of it at all. I tend to get shin splints while running on the treadmill. Not my idea of fun. So I am currently sticking with the track. 16 times around is a mile. Around and around I go. I want to increase this distance. I know there is much to improve on my running. While there on Thursday night I introduced myself to the instructor who leads the triathlon class. He happens to be the race coordinator for the triathlon I will be running in June. He was working with a guy. He worked him HARD. I am considering joining the class. I know he will kick my butt. I also know that it would be good for me. I have a lot to learn. I think I would rather be pushed to my limit and learn, then continue in ignorance and struggle.

Isaiah 40:31
but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.

1 Corinthians 9:24
Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize.

I will run and not grow weary! I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. I will do a triathlon because I believe. I know the Lord is doing more than just training me for a race, so much more. If only I knew what it is.

I Think I Was Just Forced To Change

I went to sign into my OLD BLOGGER when it rerouted me to the new blogger sign in. It said I could bypass this only one time. Meaning if I did not change I would no longer be able to access my blog. That is not a good thing. So today I guess is the day that I changed over to Beta Blogger. I hope this is something I won't regret.

A Bead Well Traveled...

It's latest adventure...

up my daughter's nose.

This week in pics

Burr it's cold outside. To go to the car we have been making the kids suit up in snow pants along with hat, mittens and scarves.

Must days this just adds a few minutes to our routine. This morning I had to wake them both up to take their dad to work. DD just laid there while I suited her up. Half way through she said, "I am still sleeping." Then conked back out.

My girlfriend dropped of a traveling treasure box the other day. It is a part of Freecycle. It is a tote filled with children's toys, puzzles and books. The idea is to take things that you want and replace it with things from your own home. Clean, gently used items. It is a great idea. The box travels from home to home with a constant give and take there is always something new. Little girl absolutely adores this talking Dora doll. She takes it everywhere. Dear son also found some cool treasures. It was fun going through our toys to see what we could pass on that some other kid might enjoy. Inside the tote is also a journal of where the tote has traveled to and what each person thought of their treasures. To participate you should be a freecycle member, the name of the treasure box we had was Krystynn.

In the midst of my auditions and dental work my kids spent some time with my parents. My mom was working on some crocheting projects, scarves for the granddaughters and a baby blanket for a birthday gift for my niece. DS was fascinated by it. When we went out shopping, he bought a few things; hair gel, a ball of yarn and a crochet hook. Before we were out of the parking lot he was already starting. Now, I have never crocheted! I do not know a thing about how to do it. I know you have yarn and a hook and that's about it. I advised we wait for grandma to show him how to start it. He replied "Don't worry mom, I know how to do it." More power to you kid. By the time we had traveled the 2 miles home he had a good little chain going. He plopped himself down in the chair and continued to crochet for the next hour and a half. When he finally stopped for dinner the chain was 6 feet long. You go boy!

Grandma came by for lesson two going back the other direction, they tried a dish cloth but DS found that a little too complex. I think he is going to stick to making chains for now.

My hubby is intimidated by newborns. He held his own children the day they were born. When it comes to other people's new babies he has never really wanted to hold them. When my sister-in-law had their baby in August, hubby said he would not hold his new nephew for a few months. The other night they were over and my SIL plopped her son in hubby's arms. It had been a few months. I love this picture.

Fingers still numb. Going back upstairs.

Too Cold To Blog

With temps in the negative, my basement is freezing. Hence my desire to spend any length of time at the computer. Even as I type this my fingertips are going numb from the cold. I planned on sharing some pictures today but blogger is not cooperating. I will try again later to upload pics.

So just so know, all is well. I am on track with exercise. I am staying warm, upstairs. I will return later to try again. I am not really on sabbatical just limiting my time in the arctic temps of my basement. I should be back to my regular daily blogging in no time.

Have a great day!

The Dance

At my weight class today I went light on legs as I did not want to overdo it. Something in me said I should at least be able to walk and preferably dance for the audition. At the end of class my trainer said the most beautiful thing to me. "You are going to do great, it's anointed and appointed." I had never put the two words together but I loved that she shared that with me. I do not know where she stands spiritually but she blessed me.
I arrived at the church, took off my coat and put on my dance shoes. I began to stretch when the Worship Arts pastor came out and invited me into his office. He had just finished one dance audition and wanted to include me in the discussion about music. A short while later I was off to the large children's room where the dance audition would take place. We talked about dance and after a few minutes we were joined by his assistant. After a few more questions and answers it was time to dance. I danced to Phillips, Craig and Dean's Let The Worshipers Arise. When it was done they were both smiling and said it was beautiful. That the dance told a story. We talked more, I shared some Davidic dance steps. Then we talked even more. In a few weeks I will be joining the praise team on a Thursday night as we venture into what our next steps will be.
Praise the Lord for His hand in all of this. For whom the son sets free shall be free indeed. My prayer is that more and more will be free to worship the King. Including worship Him with dance.
Thanks everyone for your prayers! The Lord is good!
