When you say the word thanks do you pronounce it with a short or long A sound?
Short a is A as in cat.

Is it physically possible to say it with a short A? I can't seem to do it...so I guess you know what my vote is!:)
long A.
i'm not sure it is physically possible to say it with a short A. i've been sitting here trying.
Short. But I am British!
Long A....and with at least 2 syllables...I am from Arkansas you know, LOL! ;o)
Love and hugs,
Diane
I use a long A.
I use a long A.
Long for sure. but it does depend on where you live. Like Linds, being British. or, for example, the word Bear. My friend Liz from Long Island pronounces it "Baahr" where us Northern folks say it "Bair".
I tried pronouncing it with a short A with no luck... until I read Linds comment... then I had a short O sound. Still no short A. So I vote for the long A!
Just for the record:
Webster does pronounce it short. Although most Americans I know say it with a long A. Interesting stuff.
ThAnks to all who commented!
